Director of Youth Services Sadie Mahoney has been recognized as a PASEsetter Award winner for her work as an after school professional and her impact on our Teen Center. The purpose of the award, given by the Partnership for After School Education (PASE), is to acknowledge “the best and the brightest of New York City's youth development professionals” as well as to highlight the impact that after school programs have on the lives of New York City’s youth. The after school educators selected for the award receive $5,000 for their organization, a crystal award engraved with their name, a feature on the PASE website, and recognition by their peers as a leader in the after school field. Winners will be presented with the award at a ceremony on March 1, 2012.

Secret Survivors Actress & Activist to Conduct Workshop
Wednesday, January 4th

Amita Swadhin, an actress and sexual abuse survivor, held a workshop for our Changing Futures Program participants. Since 2009, she has been a cast member and coordinator of Secret Survivors, a dramatic narrative featuring the stories of child sexual abuse survivors. Secret Survivors is currently being produced as an educational documentary, to be released in 2012. Over the past decade, Ms. Swadhin has given presentations and performed nationwide. In 2011, she served as Board Chair of the National Youth Advocacy Coalition, an organization advocating for and with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) youth.
Since 1982, KHCC has offered the only long-term treatment for child sexual abuse in the Bronx that is always free and offered in a welcoming, non-hospital setting, through our Child Sexual Abuse Treatment and Prevention (CSA) area. We are also part of the End Child Sexual Abuse Campaign of education and advocacy, a national effort funded by the Ms. Foundation for Women. Billye Jones-Mulraine, our Assistant Executive Director for Clinical Services, has lent her expertise on this issue to various news outlets and publications. Most recently, she appeared on Bronx Talk to speak about the signs and symptoms of abuse.
