HEAD START HEALTH AIDE (posted 2/15/2012)

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00AM-4:00PM
(Hours subject to change based on program needs)

Responsibilities:

The Head Start Health Aide's primary responsibilities are to work closely with the Health Services Manager in carrying out the day-by-day operation of the program and to facilitate communication between parents, staff and the community specifically in the areas related to Health Tracking and compliance with Federal, State, and City Health Codes by performing the following tasks:

  • Implements and maintains Health tracking and monitoring procedures to ensure that there is a completed and up to date physical on file for every child in the program and every parent volunteer.
  • Tracks children with chronic health concerns and follows up with parents to confirm ongoing medical care.
  • Responsible for dispensing medication if and when necessary, within the guidelines described in the HS medication administration policies.
  • Cares for children who become ill during school hours and notifies parents to pick up child.
  • Generates and distributes health alert notices upon discovery of any contagious illness affecting a child, parent or staff in the program.
  • Assists parents in making doctors appointments and in advocating for themselves in medical offices.
  • Replenishes first aid kits, toothbrushes and medical supply cabinet.
  • Completes Health and Safety Checklist.
  • Attends weekly case conference and administrative meetings.
  • Makes home visits when necessary and as scheduled.
  • Assists in kitchen and classroom and performs secretarial duties as necessary.
  • In conjunction with Family Assistant and UPK Assistant implements recruitment and intake procedures.
  • Responsible for understanding and implementing Program Performance Standards.
  • Data entry into COPA data tracking system , and DOH queries and data tracking systems.
  • Any and all other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or Director.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum High School Diploma
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
  • Health/Medical Background
  • Prolific in computer programming and webpage research
  • Technologically savvy and expeditious data entry skills

INTERNSHIP: College Directions Program (posted 12/16/2011)

Hours: 10 hours per week (minimum)

Responsibilities:

The intern will be responsible for planning and will assist in conducting college education workshops for juniors and seniors in the program. They will also take on a small caseload of students to assist in the process of applying to college. The intern will work on special projects and/or programs: game nights, college fairs, college trips, etc.

The essential functions of the internship include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Research and assist in the coordination of workshops that pertain to college appplications throughout the year.
  • Provide individual counseling for students discussing financial aid options, college selection, and the actual application process.
  • Research in private scholarships, donations, and funding opportunities for the students and program as a whole.
  • Collaboratively work within the Youth Department during activities, trips, and events for youth participants across the program areas.

What the intern will gain:

  • One-on-one experience in academic and personal counseling.
  • Training in the Goddard Riverside Options Method.
  • Experience in running groups and program-wide trips.
  • The ability to design workshops and events for youth.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with high school age students.
  • A full understanding of the college selection and application process.
  • Ability to work until 9pm on days of internship.
  • Male students strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Spanish speaking preferred but not required.
  • Undergraduate and Graduate students welcomed.
